We are glad to see you! We are glad to see you”, the children of Bless the Children School sang to welcome us to their community. They ran and sang for at least a mile. Ushered onto the school grounds by a joyful motorcade of boda bodas (small motorbikes used for transportation around the country), a pickup truck full of children waving palm tree leaves and the community watching and cheering us on. As Watha said, our hearts were “bursting with joy and love”. Never have we been so royally welcomed. Not in a lifetime. This overwhelmingly kind gesture of hospitality provides a glimpse into the Uganda we’ve come to love. A Uganda that is rich in natural beauty and a people who are modest yet proud of their cultural identities. It is of this Uganda, not the Uganda of colonial myths of a deep dark Africa, that we’ll return singing. Thank you Bless the Children for such a joyous start to our Day 5.
